Mendham Township First Aid Squad is 100% professional volunteers and on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Our NJ Certified EMTs provide pre-hospital emergency medical care for both pediatric and adult emergencies at no charge. Call 9-1-1 and the Squad will respond.
MTFAS is a scramble squad — when someone calls 9-1-1 for a medical emergency, members get an alert wherever they are and quickly respond. We have a dedicated group of volunteers who are always ready to help. Our members are nationally trained and certified as EMTs and Ambulance Drivers, and continuously advance their medical education through training and NJ State Certified classes to stay up to date on all protocols and quality care.
To cover the entirety of Mendham Township, our two ambulances are split between our Ralston Bay and Brookside Bay. Depending on the location of the caller and the volunteers available, volunteers respond to one of the two Bays and then proceed with the ambulance to the caller location.

About Advanced Life Support (ALS) charges: our members volunteer their time, so Basic Life Support (BLS) is provided without any fees when we respond. In a more serious emergency, a patient may need advanced ALS care from hospital-based paramedics — there is a charge for the hospital-based paramedics.

Some people want to give back to their community, and maybe even save a life. Does this sound like you?
You don't need a medical background. The Initial EMT training teaches you everything you need to know to start helping.
Every year, the Squad answers about 375–420 calls for help and it runs entirely on local volunteers trained as ambulance drivers and EMTs.
Individuals 16+ years old are welcome. If you are 16 or 17, join through our Cadet Program.

Become an EMT
A state training fund pays for your initial EMT training when you join the squad.
Complete a state-certified EMT class (~200 hours; attendance is mandatory — some programs are fully in-person, some hybrid) plus 10 clinical hours, then pass the NREMT exam. With your National Registry certification, contact NJ DOH for your NJ EMT certification — and you're ready to provide Basic Life Support (BLS).

Become a Driver
Operate the ambulance and support the crew on scene. The squad trains you — including your CEVO emergency-driving course and CPR (BLS) certification. Express interest and we'll walk you through it.
The Cadet program offers high school students a meaningful opportunity to connect with their community and experience the medical field firsthand. Cadets complete the same coursework and classes as our adult volunteers on the path to becoming EMTs.
Cadets are expected to respond to calls, attend meetings, and help in our biweekly rig checks.

What to do in an emergency

Call 9-1-1 right away — and note the time symptoms started.
Other sudden warning signs: numbness or weakness on one side of the body; confusion or trouble understanding; a severe headache with no known cause.
Every minute counts — brain cells are lost the entire time a stroke goes untreated, and the most effective treatments are time-limited. Call 9-1-1 at the first sign. Even if the symptoms fade after a few minutes, call anyway — a brief episode can be a warning of a major stroke to come. The time symptoms began guides the hospital's treatment, so write it down.
